Trick 'r Treat 2 Happening After Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Michael Dougherty has been a busy man. He wrote and directed Krampus, then got tapped to write Godzilla: King of the Monsters and then while writing earned the job of directing said Godzilla movie. But that doesn't mean he has forgotten about Sam and his sequel to Trick 'r Treat.

When Dougherty talked to IGN about Krampus the conversation swerved to the, inevitable Trick 'r Treat sequel talk and Dougherty explained that it is coming... Just not anytime soon.

"It's going to happen, the tricky thing is that as we were announcing Trick 'r Treat 2, I was just finishing the screenplay for Krampus with my co-writers and it was just too tempting to not do Krampus. If we didn't do it, somebody else was going to."

He then went on to explain that just because Krampus took priority that Trick 'r Treat 2 hadn't been sitting stagnant. He said he wanted to get the story right and not rush anything. But what Dougherty didn't know at the time was that he would soon be writing the script for Godzilla 2.

Trick 'r Treat 2 was set to happen after Krampus but just months after the movie's release Dougherty was tapped to write Godzilla which, of course, meant TrT2 had to take a backseat. Then after a few months of talk it was announced that he would also direct his script for Godzilla 2 and that means pushing TrT2 back even farther.

Now it might look like TrT2 is stuck in limbo but that is not the case. Legendary and Warner Bros. have a great working relationship going on. 32 of the films Legendary produced have been released by WB which include Trick 'r Treat, Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island and the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Both companies stand firmly behind Dougherty and fully support his follow-up to Trick 'r Treat. Neither have any intentions of letting the sequel die, he just has to finish Godzilla 2 first.

While doing an interview on the podacst Post Mortem (via Dread Central), Dougherty revealed that he will start working on it when he's finished with Godzilla: King of the Monsters:

“My hope is that once Godzilla has been put to rest that I can dive back into [Trick ‘r Treat 2]…I would love to finish writing it in post-production [of Godzilla] and then I’d love to make it my next project.”

If all goes smoothly Godzilla: King of the Monster will be released March 22, 2019 and then Trick 'r Treat 2 will, most likely, go into production late 2019 or early 2020.
